Mayor Dan Plato wishes all Muslims well over the holy month of Ramadaan

Statement by the Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato

As our Muslim community prepares for the month of Ramadaan, on behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to extend my best wishes and blessings to you during this period of deep spirituality.

Indeed, this Ramadaan won’t be the same this year with families and communities breaking the daily fast together, but it is a necessary sacrifice to help protect your loved ones, your neighbours, your friends, and the front line staff working to flatten the curve. We need your help to make sure we limit the spread of COVID-19.

I encourage you to please continue to practice social distancing and good hygiene by washing your hands regularly, not touching your face or shaking hands. I urge all to continue these new habits. While we await details from President Cyril Ramaphosa on how the lockdown will be phased out, we know that we are not yet able to say we have beaten the virus.

I am pleased to see many communities and businesses working together to feed the less fortunate and those struggling under the impact of not being able to earn an income. This same spirit of sharing and support is part of the meaning of Ramadaan. The City is doing what it can to support efforts by national government to feed vulnerable communities.

We value the important role that the Muslim community plays in our city - your generosity and compassion help us work towards building a caring city.

Cape Town remains a city of diversity, where all cultures, religions and beliefs can pull together in times of need and it is something we can be proud of. As you observe this month of fasting, reflection, sacrifice, worship and giving, I wish you strength and fulfilment, particularly as we navigate these trying times.
